Curious About Satisfying Curiosity?

Everyone knows the saying, "Curiosity killed the cat." The mind has an extraordinary tool at its disposal that it uses to help you learn about the world around you. This tool, curiosity, is the desire to learn and discover everything you can about everything that interests you.

It's important to maintain a healthy curiosity because without it, you will have no force driving you to increase your knowledge base. Throughout history, curiousness has been the catalyst behind the great inventions and ideas that changed the world for the better. Thomas Edison would never have invented the light bulb without curiosity pushing him to learn about electricity, and there would be no air travel if Orville and Wilbur Wright hadn't been intrigued about flight. There are a number of reasons why it's important to maintain curiosity, and there are even more ways to nurture and develop curiosity.

Curiosity is essential for human development because it activates the mind and helps people make new observations and develop new ideas. It is the force that drives people to learn. A healthy curiosity enables you to see things others don't see simply because you're willing to take the time to look. For example, every person is essentially grown from a DNA code, but until Watson and Crick became curious about the human makeup, nobody understood DNA. These two men looked deeper and longer than others to find the source of human growth. Without curiosity they never would have had the desire to make this discovery. Curiosity also drives away boredom because a curious person doesn't sit around and do nothing. Curious people tend to travel more, read more, investigate more, and overall learn more. Their curiosity refuses to allow them to sit, to take things as they are, or to accept other people's assessment of facts without proving the facts themselves.

Curiosity isn't difficult to develop, and like most things, once you get in the habit of it, your thirst for it will grow, so long as you keep an open mind. Close-minded people are less curious than others because they aren't willing to change their ideas and ingrained beliefs. In order to really learn you have to be open to the possibility that your ideas may not be right. Of course, if you are right, learning more about your idea or belief will simply strengthen the foundation you already have. Either way it's a win-win. Along those same lines, to remain curious about life, never just assume that things are just the way they are, or that they have to remain that way. Thomas Edison didn't believe that fire had to be the only source of light, even though it had been for hundreds of years; he also didn't believe that electricity had to be only visible in lightning storms. Because of his curiosity and his refusal to accept that things just had to be the way they were, the world now has control of electricity. The world also has light captured in a small glass bulb. Without his curiosity, he never would have made these discoveries.

Lets use children as an example. They always ask questions and always want to know why and how. Little children have an insatiable curiosity and they don't stop asking until they are satisfied with the answer. Follow their lead and ask questions. Ask why something is the way it is, or how something is done. The greatest minds have never stopped asking why and how, and they have made the greatest discoveries. The next example you can learn from children is to examine everything. The world is a giant planet of discoveries yet to be made. Children know this, and too many adults tend to forget this. To grow your curiosity, look at everything as something to be explored. You can learn something new from anything.

Without curiosity there is nothing pushing you to learn in life. The result of this is that you aren't learning, growing, or developing. You may feel stagnant, like you're waiting for life to start. When you're curious, however, the exact opposite occurs. Everything in life becomes a great adventure because everything you do will now feed your mind, your intellect. Curiosity gives everything a purpose, and you'll see a reason behind every experience.  Curiosity can be the catalyst that makes life fun, so develop it and see what new adventures you experience as a result.
